Korean Holidays and Clinic Hours: Check Before You Book Flights

When planning a trip, most people start with the procedure and the recovery period. But there are real cases of patients booking flights on that basis alone, only to arrive during a stretch when clinics were closed for three days straight. Korean public holidays differ from those in other countries, and the two major festivals move in the calendar every year. This guide covers what is worth confirming before you lock in your dates.

The major festivals fall on different dates each year

Korea's two largest festivals, Seollal and Chuseok, follow the lunar calendar. That means their dates in the Gregorian calendar shift from year to year. If one fell in September last year, that tells you nothing about this year.

Both usually become multi-day holiday periods with the surrounding days attached. During these stretches a large share of smaller clinics close entirely, and those that do open often run shortened hours. Emergency departments at large hospitals stay open, but those exist for emergencies, not for scheduled consultations or procedures.

The days right after a long holiday deserve caution too. Postponed appointments pile up, which can make your preferred time slot hard to get.

Holidays with fixed dates

Unlike the lunar festivals, some public holidays land on the same date every year: New Year's Day, Independence Movement Day, Children's Day, Memorial Day, Liberation Day, National Foundation Day, Hangul Day, and Christmas. Buddha's Birthday follows the lunar calendar, so it moves.

There is also a system that grants a weekday off when certain holidays fall on a weekend, and which holidays it applies to can change from year to year. So rather than judging from a list alone, it is more reliable to check the actual calendar for the period you plan to visit.

What about weekends

Many clinics see patients on Saturday mornings only. Some stay open into the afternoon, but that is not the norm. Sundays are closed at most places.

Some medical institutions in districts that receive many international patients do run weekend or evening hours. That varies by institution, however, and even within one institution it can differ by department or by which doctor is on duty. If you want a weekend consultation, it is safer to confirm availability before building your schedule around it.

What to confirm before setting dates

Before you commit to flights and accommodation, it helps to have these settled.

• Whether a holiday period falls inside the dates you are considering
• How many days are needed between the first consultation and the procedure, and whether a closure lands in that gap
• If a return visit is needed for suture removal or a progress check, whether the clinic is open on that date
• Whether you can have a final check-up before you fly home

This matters most when a procedure requires a return visit. Your first appointment may fit perfectly, only for the follow-up date to land in the middle of a holiday period, forcing you to extend your stay or rearrange everything.
